Color Palette
I’ve been trying to look for a color palette recently, and decisions were difficult to make since I needed that granularity with the selections of colors, while also keeping a minimal amount of colors to use.
Originally, I was deciding if I should use a 8 bit color palette, but looking at it, it was limiting. I then looked at 16 bit, but that was extreme. So after a while I put the search off, and decided to just go for a 9 bit palette, which is around 512 colors.
I couldn’t really use the original 9 bit palette because it wasn’t organized in a usable manner, the colors were all over the place! So I looked for more 9bit palettes and came across a few, but they were either organized in a way that I didn’t like, or they weren’t really 9 bit palettes.
After a while, I found this 9 bit palette from itch.io. It was alright, colors were organized, and was pretty much what I was looking for.
With my review, it contains;
- Black, White, 6 shades of Gray
- 6 bright colors, with 13 shades each (excl. Black and White)
- Plus 6x6 shades of each colors
- 6 desaturated colors, with 13 shades each (excl. Black and White)
- Plus 6x4 shades of each colors
This is ooooookay, despite having a VDP Color Ramp, It’s okay? I guess? A modified version of this palette turned to a linear ramp is possible, but It’s okay for now.
If colors were to leave the palette in-game, A shader can snap them back to place if ever, but future me will have to design that.
Thanks for reading this useless blog lol. I’ll be back with more updates soon.
